The Path Of The Pugilist: Part 3

By Christopher Mixan

Welcome to the third installment of my series “Path of a Pugilist”. On this part, we will be looking into the events immediately following Vol.2. We will reflect on the events after my first MMA fight and before my First boxing match.

Following a victory, there is no better feeling that I can explain. The sheer adrenaline, sense of accomplishment, and recognition felt after the contest is like nothing I’ve ever experienced to this day. Everyone that is silent and uninterested while you put your nose to the grindstone all of a sudden is your ‘closest supporter and will always have your back’. The truth I’ve found is the feeling of glory after a fight can be compared to a high. You feel on top of the world and like no one can say anything to you and as a result you can do some very unintelligent things.

The main thing I’d like to expand on in this edition how people always have a motive, even if you don’t understand it. My philosophy on how I deal with people is; If they’re not there for you when the going gets tough, or when it’s time to put the work in to improve, than they’re not worth having around.

I did not realize this immediately though. Just like anything else you learn through experience. I definitely learned the hard way. Being a quiet and introverted kid for the majority of my life meant that this whole rush of people wanting to talk and congratulate was completely foreign to me. Not to say that I don’t enjoy some recognition for an accomplishment, but the ability to differentiate a well meaning person from someone with ulterior motives became essential as I progress in this aspired fighting career.

To conclude this edition, finding selfless and well meaning people is no easy task. I’m glad that I have such a good support system of coaches, friends and family that help me along this path. For any fellow aspiring fighters, I would recommend that you try and find the same.
