A mouth-watering bantamweight main event between surging division contender, Rob Font and former undisputed champion, Cody Garbrandt is slated to take main event honours at a UFC Fight Night event on May 22nd. — with a location or venue for the showcase yet to be determined by the promotion.
Initially calling for a May return against former featherweight champion, Jose Aldo, former 135-pound gold holder, Garbrandt will instead make his return to competition against New England Cartel standout, Font.
Returning at UFC Vegas 17 in December, Font added another win to his streak, which now consists of three on the trot — finishing one-time title challenger, Marlon Moraes with an eye-catching first round knockout.
Snapping a three-fight knockout slide at UFC 250 last June, recent Mark Henry mover, Ohio native, Garbandt scored a Knockout of the Year contender with a massive, buzzer-beating hook to stop longtime division contender, Raphael Assuncao in his tracks. News of the intriguing clash was first reported by ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto.
Entering the potential bantamweight title eliminator off his stunning win over the aforenoted former WSOF champion, Moraes, 33-year-old Massachusetts native, Font has also taken wins over both Ricky Simon, and upcoming Bellator bantamweight championship challenger, Sergio Pettis on his current streak.
Attempting to score his second straight win, a positive COVID-19 test result and a torn vein in his bicep ruled Garbrandt from a flyweight title challenge against incumbent division best, Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 255 last November, with plans for a 125-pound debut ultimately put on hold.
Hoping to add the #3 ranked, Font to an eye-catching professional record, the heavy-hitting Garbrandt has so far bested the likes of August Mendes, Thomas Almeida, Takeya Mizugaki, former champion, Dominick Cruz, as well as the above mentioned, Assuncao.
