Before Chris Mixan fights Saturday at Island Fights 59 at the Pensacola Bay Center, we had him in the Fight Bananas Studio to discuss our all time welterweight mix martial arts Mount Rushmore.
The Fighter Chris Mixan, The Professor & Coach Jon Radford and Host Dave Van Auken all had 3 of the 4 spots on the Welterweight Mount Rushmore exactly the same:
First, was George St. Pierre 26-2 a two time UFC welterweight Champion. GSP went through the welterweight division not once but twice. George St. Pierre fought some of the greatest welterweights to ever live, legends like Matt Hughes, BJ Penn, Jon Fitch, Nick Diaz just to name a few. George St Pierre is a lock for the welterweight and in our eyes any weight class mix martial arts Mount Rushmore.
Second we all had the legendary Matt Hughes on our welterweight Mount Rushmore. Matt Hughes was one of the first stars in the UFC. He dominated the welterweight division over a 5 year span winning 13 out of 14 fights. He was in epic battles with Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk and George St. Pierre. Matt Hughes was a pioneer of the UFC welterweight division and easily made our Mount Rushmore.
Third, was a surprise to all 3 of us that we had the same Ruthless fighter, Robbie Lawler. Robbie Lawler fought at UFC 37 in 2002 and now has a schedule fight against a killer in the welterweight division Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC 245 in late 2019. The Ruthless Lawler has been a fans favorite for almost 20 years. The UFC Champion has been in some of the greatest welterweight fights of all time including his epic performance against Rory McDonald at UFC 189.
So three of the four welterweights locked in stone on our Mount Rushmore, which fighter rounds out our list?
Chris Mixan / Rory McDonald
Jon Radford / Nate Diaz
Dave Van Auken / Jorge Masvidal
Who made the right choice to finalize there Mix Martial Arts Welterweight Mount Rushmore?
